This Weeks Geek - System Change

So what would you do if a portion of your home town was seized by the government, walled off, and then turned into a maximum security prison? Probably not much, you may send a letter to you congressman, maybe join a protest for a while, and eventually go home and eat Cheetos. Good thing Bruce Wayne is not you. He actually joins politics to try and get this place taken down. Bruce does not agree with Arkham City and wants it shut down. Too bad he gets gets tossed into the place himself as a result of this. Welcome to the start of Batman Arkham City my friends; the night has started poorly and it is not about to get any better.
You know the recipe; the world has a high level of technology and the world is getting ready to come to an end due to some event (in this case asteroids), so let’s setup a way to save humanity. In this case they create Arks and place people in cryogenic stasis in them so they will survive the catastrophe. It seems like an awesome and great plan, so what are the chances that things actually work as planned? If you are thinking not so well, then you’re right on the mark. 107 years later you wake up and you are the only survivor of your Ark. The other stasis pods failed and now your fellow Ark mates are dried up husks. You leave the Ark and walk outside to what should be a nearly deserted world and almost get taken out by a bandit. You are saved at the last second by Dan Hagar who gives you a crash course in the Wasteland. The short story is that the world did not go boom, there were survivors, but things have still gone to hell. There are bandits, mutants (which you can’t loot mostly, bastards) and the Authority.
What the hell Star Wars? In one day you single handily destroy my future budget and don't even bat an eye! First thing this morning I find that Star Wars: The Old Republic is officially up for pre-order, and with three editions. First there is the Standard edition that comes with a color stone to change lightsaber and blaster colors for $59.99. Then you have the Origin only Digital Deluxe edition for $79.99 that has the stone, a flare gun, training droid for combat, HoloDancer, HoloCam and a STAP (vehicle). But you had to have a Collector's Edition that has all that, a Mouse Droid and a Store that only CE owners get access to. And that's only the digital goods, it also comes with all this:
It would be a no brainier for me to buy this, hell it would have already been pre-ordered if it were not for the price of $150! Then after finally wrapping my head around this Microsoft adds fuel to the fire at the San Diego Comic-Con. To sell more Star Wars Kinect games when they come out they created a special Star Wars themed XBOX 360. The system itself is painted to look like RD-D2, complete with sounds and lights to differentiate it from its console brothers. Follow this up with a C-3PO gold controller, a white Kinect and a 320 GB Hard Drive. I want this, but it is $449!
So thanks Star Wars, EA, and Microsoft. In one day, ONE DAY, you have deprived me of $600!!! I hope you are happy with yourselves.
Microsoft is preparing their consoles to take a new disk format. This can mean great things for the 360. More space on a disk would be great. This could prevent more 3 DVD games from being released. Probably what Microsoft did not expect was to brick a small number (whatever that actually means) of their player base. Microsoft has even said "Following a recent update to our system software, we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs".
But they are willing to make up for this to the people it happens to. Eurogamer has stated that if you have the issue to contact Xbox support at www.xbox.com/support/contact to verify it has happened. Once they have verified the issue then you can be your system replaced with a nice shiny Xbox 360 S complete with a 250 GB hard dive. Not too shabby.
Welcome to Aperture Science, where the future is now. Or at least it was until you destroyed the megalomaniac AI that was running the place. This was a little over a hundred years ago and the place has not seen any real love. You start the game being brought out of stasis by Wheatly, the AI that is supposed to be in charge of all the humans. Too bad you are the only one left and the others are "bloody vegetables". So now you two are going to try and escape this place before the management comes down and knocks some heads.
