Wizards to buy D&D Beyond

Wizards of the Coast is apparently buying the popular online tool D&D Beyond. I am not going to lie, my first thought at this news was “Didn’t Wizards already own D&D Beyond?” But apparently I was wrong. Fandom is the current owner of the valuable digital tool set that has increased the accessibility of the role playing game, and pending approval, will make $146.3 million in cash from the sell. But the important question in all this, what does that mean to us, the players.

First off, there are no plans to stop supporting D&D Beyond. All characters, purchases, and campaigns are set to move over. I don’t envy the backend group that will have to move the server architecture from Fandom to Wizards; they are going to end up with at least one late night. Does no plans mean that nothing with change? No we are not going to be that lucky. We probably won’t see any changes in the first year or two after the sale, but things will change eventually, we can only hold out hope they are good changes.

Next question is, will this be bad in the long term. Being the eternal optimist that I am when it comes to my hobbies I am going to say no. Wizards has been running D&D for a long long long long time now. I can hope that they continue to do right with this tool. But only time will tell.
